Wealdstone FC has a new manager, and his name is Gary Waddock! A bold move by the club's board, this appointment is sure to spark some interesting discussions among fans and football enthusiasts alike.
With a two-and-a-half-year contract, Waddock brings a wealth of experience and a stable presence to the team. The club considered various options, including an interim solution, but ultimately, they believed Waddock's leadership would be a game-changer, especially with a busy schedule ahead.
Born and bred in north-west London, Waddock is no stranger to the area. His legendary status as a player for Queens Park Rangers, a local rival, speaks volumes about his talent and impact on the region's football scene. A former Eire international, he also played for Millwall, Bristol Rovers, and Luton Town, solidifying his reputation as a well-rounded and respected figure in the sport.
But here's where it gets controversial... Waddock's managerial career has had its fair share of ups and downs. His most recent stint at Aldershot Town was a second attempt, following a successful first period that saw the team promoted with a record-breaking 101 points. However, his time in north Hampshire was troubled, and now, at 63, he's ready for a new challenge.
And this is the part most people miss: Waddock's coaching journey has taken him to various clubs, with his longest tenure at Wycombe Wanderers. He's also worked with Portsmouth, Cambridge United, and most recently, Walsall, where he was part of the coaching staff. So, why Wealdstone? Chairman Rory Fitzgerald believes Waddock's hunger for management and his extensive experience make him the perfect fit for the club's ambitious vision.
"We're grateful to Walsall FC for facilitating Gary's release at this crucial time in the season," Fitzgerald added. "We believe Gary's appointment is exactly what we need to maximize the potential of our talented squad."
Waddock will be working alongside the existing management team at The Vale, including First-Team Coach Danny Payne and Lead Analyst Elliott Minto.
Welcome to Wealdstone, Gary! We wish you every success, and we can't wait to see what you bring to the team.
For those eager to meet the new manager in person, a "Meet the Manager" session is scheduled for Tuesday, March 24th, at 7:30 pm in the main hall at The Vale. Mark your calendars, Wealdstone fans, and come along to welcome Gary and ask him all your burning questions!
